Indian Wind Power Generation
This project sees the construction of ten new wind turbines in India. By providing renewable energy, the project helps to reduce India’s reliance on fossil fuels for electricity generation. The project aims to generate emission reductions of 84,000 tCO2 between 2006 and 2012.
Technology partner
SELCO (The Solar Electric Light Company)
SELCO designs and sells solar systems, which include a small solar photovoltaic panel, a battery and energy efficient lights. The organisation installs the systems and provides after-sales servicing to ensure the systems continue to deliver benefit. Central to the approach is the partnership with micro-finance organisations, which allows SELCO’s customers to pay for the systems on terms they can afford.
Access to clean, good-quality light also provides increased opportunities for income generation through basket making, silk weaving and tailoring. School children also have light by which they can study.
Solar Lighting Systems in Rural India
This project won SELCO an Ashden Award for Sustainable Energy. The organisation designs and sells solar lighting systems in rural India. The systems replace kerosene lamps and the project aims to reduce emissions by 34,500 tCO2 between 2002-2012.

About the Project
This project supports the construction of wind turbines at two sites in the Indian states of Karnataka and Rajasthan. A total of ten wind turbines have been constructed, with an overall capacity of 8 MW. The electricity they produce is enough to provide for almost 30,000 homes. |
